Contrary to popular belief that has spread with the growth of the India Pale Ale (IPA) and its colonial mythology, the British did not teach Indians how to drink. Indians have actually been making and drinking beer made with rice, millet, or maize for thousands of years.
Unfortunately, as a result of numerous foreign invasions, much of India’s written history—including any early recipes for a uniquely Indian beer—has been lost. But it is from this understanding of history and a desire to provide a beer uniquely designed for Indians, that Cool India Brewing was born.
After attending school to become a chemical engineer, Venkat Matta found his true passion and found himself running Indian restaurants in North America for the last 15 years. And while he learned much about the complexities of Indian cuisine, he couldn’t understand why the beer served in Indian restaurants was always flavourless, adjunct lagers made with high sugars or corn syrup.
And so, with a desire to create beer that pairs well with Indian cuisine, and an understanding that Indian cuisine is so much more than just “spicy curry,” in 2016 he founded Cool India Brewing in order to make naturally smooth lagers and ales with a refreshing taste, natural ingredients, and a nod to Indian culture.
